John's father was a horse trainer at Aqueduct and Belmont thoroughbred racetracks which may have been where John attained his love for horses. He grew up in New York City but spent many summers on his grandfather's farm in the Catskills. He told many stories of that farm and how much he loved going there.
John worked for NYRA at the betting windows for many years. In 1962 he married the love of his life, Ann McVay and soon welcomed a daughter, Barbara Danielle. In the early 1970's they purchased an 1880's farmhouse in Middle Grove where they raised a few thoroughbreds. John was a fixture at Saratoga Racetrack for many years even after his retirement.
