Susan Kay Rust Bates

Native Eugene resident Susan Kay Rust Bates passed away peacefully at age 67 on June 22, 2021 due to complications from Early Onset Alzheimer's Dementia. Sue's Alzheimer's became very aggressive over the last six months taking her sooner than expected. Friends and family miss her dearly.

Susan was born at Sacred Heart Hospital on July 18, 1953 to Ritchey and Nancy Kelm Rust. Ritchey moved the family to Boulder, Colorado to finish his pharmacy degree when Susan was 2 years old. They returned to Eugene a year later with Susan and her new brother Randy. Youngest brother Darren joined the family when Susan was 7 and the family had settled on Sally Way in Eugene. Sue lived the rest of her life in the Eugene Springfield area.

She attended Meadowlark grade school (now Buena Vista where her grandkids attend Spanish immersion school.) From there she went to Cal Young Middle school and Sheldon High School (Class of '71). At Sheldon Sue was an honor student, senior class Vice President, participated on the Forensics team and performed with the Sheldon Colleens dance troupe.

It was also at Sheldon where she met her future husband, Cress Bates. They had their first kiss in the front seat of Cress' 1964 convertible Ford Galaxy 500 with "Let It Be" playing on the car radio. Sue and Cress dated their freshman and sophomore years at the U of O and married on August 18, 1973. Their plan was to raise a family, dote on grandkids and travel in retirement. Most of it happened.

Susan is survived by her husband of 47 years, Cress Bates, daughters Janna Bates (Gio) DelaGuardia and Kim Bates (partner Cameron Carlisle); and grandkids Otto (10) and Anna(7).

Susan is also survived by her younger brothers Randy Rust of Knappa, Oregon and Darren Rust of Mansfield, Texas.

Her parents proceeded her in death.

Sue was a voracious reader. A friend said she didn't read a book without Sue's recommendation. Sue was also a copious writer and worked part time as a bank teller, a book seller at Border's Book Store and sales staff at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.

But her first passion was family where she devoted numerous hours to her daughters' music, dance, and theater interests. Sue was very active volunteering for Sheldon Theatre productions. It is heartwarming for the family to hear from many of the "kids" influenced by Sue's work at Sheldon.

In 1986 Sue and Cress started taking their girls camping along with their friends. Over 30 years later the "kids" are now bringing their kids to Camp Bates each August. Gathering with the clan at Camp Bates along the North Umpqua was one of Sue's favorite annual events.

A celebration of Sue's life will be held at the Campbell Community Center at 155 High St in Eugene, OR on July 25, 2021, from. 2:00 to 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

The Bates family would like to thank the many friends and family who have offered condolences and support. The family would also like to thank Gateway Gardens Memory Care and Signature Hospice for the care and support they gave Sue and her family. The Register-Guard
