MARTIN, Charlie R. "Mr. Milano" of Milano. Age 52. Died 9/8/1980 (Monday) at Richards Memorial Hospital, where he was rushed from the Rockdale KC Hall. He was stricken while attending a citizens meeting regarding the recent county-wide tax reappraisal. He had waged a long fight against cancer. Services held (Wed.) in Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home Chapel. Burial in Milano Cemetery.
Charlie was BORN 1/23/1928 in Milano to M/M. Charles Logan & Maude Dees Martin. Married Joyce Wise in 1949 in Hanover Comm. He held a bachelor's and master's degrees from SWTSU and was a lifelong member of the Baptist Church. Mr. Martin was a well known school administrator and basketball coach throughout Texas. He also served as the first mayor of Milano. He had resigned from coaching only the spring before his death and did not seek re-election as mayor in 1980, choosing instead, to devote his time to a building and renovation project for the Milano school. Despite health problems, he always worked for a better tomorrow for the school, the city and the people. The park in Milano is named for him - The Charlie Martin Park.
