Luther W. Modlin was born on June 3, 1839 in Jefferson Twp., Henry Co., IN, a son of Richard, born 1812 in North Carolina, and Jane (Wright) Modlin, born 1808 in Tennessee. His grandparents, William Modlin and John Wright, were both early settlers of Henry County. After his father, Richard, was married, he settled on a farm in Dudley Twp., Henry Co., IN and died there in 1869. His parents had a family of seven children. Luther lived on a farm for a number of years and then went to Cadiz and owned a lumber yard for four years. He was elected Treasurer of Henry County in 1880. He gave his attention to farming since 1882. In 1883, he went to Maine and purchased a drove of Jersey cattle, which he shipped to his 120 acre farm in Harrison Twp., Henry Co., IN. He moved his family to New Castle, Henry Co., IN in the spring of 1881.
Luther married Delilah S. Denney on August 9, 1860. She was the daughter of Shubael and Margaret Denney. They had a family of seven children: Minnie O., Isaac M., Mary E., Letha J., Thomas W., Frank G., and Harry Bruce. He married for a second time on September 17, 1893 to Ruth Noland.
