Captain James A. Thomas died May 16, 1906 in Chester County, SC at age 80. He was the last surviving Mexican War veteran from Chester County. He enlisted in the military at age 19 and lost an arm during the Battle of Churubusco. He also led Company H of the 24th Regiment, South Carolina Infantry during the Civil War.
