Services for retired teacher and principal Hardie Moran Lockett will be at 1 p.m. Monday at New Hope Baptist Church, 5002 South Central Expressway in Dallas.

Mr. Lockett, 63, died Wednesday of a brain aneurysm at Charlton Methodist Hospital in Dallas.

A wake will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Laurel Land Funeral Chapel, 6000 S. R.L. Thornton Freeway in Dallas. He will be buried at Laurel Land Memorial Park.

Born in Bremond, Texas, Mr. Lockett was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Plainview, Texas.

He earned a bachelor's degree from Bishop College in Dallas, now Paul Quinn College, and a master's degree from North Texas State University, now the University of North Texas.

In 1970, after serving in the Army, Mr. Lockett began his teaching career at William Brown Miller Elementary School in Dallas. He was later promoted to assistant principal at Lisbon Elementary School and Roosevelt High School. He ended his career as principal at Sarah Zumwalt Middle School, where he retired in 1993 after 13 years.

"He loved working with children, working with youth," said his wife, Gloria Lockett of Dallas.

In retirement, he worked to help students earn GED certificates. Throughout his career, he helped with regional spelling bees.

Mr. Lockett was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. His community service activities included helping the New Hope Bread Basket and being a Boy Scout troop leader.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Lockett is survived by sons Eric M. Lockett of Plano and Ellery M. Lockett of Dallas; brothers Carl Lockett and Allan Neil Lockett, both of Abilene; sisters BobbieRuth Nash of Plainview, Texas, Lula Marie Royals of Abilene, Marjorie P. Hutchinson of Abilene, and Brienda D. Middelton of DeSoto; and four grandchildren.
