John was a prominent Judge for many decades. He was admitted to the bar in 1831, and in 1840 began practising in Tioga, Bradford, Potter and McKean Counties. IN 1859 he was an assistant Law Judge for the 5th Judicial District of Pa. which consisted of Allegheny County and Pittsburgh. By 1862 he was Presiding Judge of the 3rd Judicial District, which was Northhampton and Lehigh Counties. He married Sarah Ann Mather on March 18, 1830. After her passing in 1832 he married Alvira Depui [ Dupuy ], on December 29, 1834. She was a daughter of Elijah Dupuy, memorial page number 70899219, and his wife Eunice ' Encie ' Baldwin. They had four sons and three daughters, which included Encie, James W. and Clara. After Alvira's passing on April 1, 1881 he married once again in November 1883, to Cordelia Bellows, who survived him.
He was a brother of Guy W Maynard. They were partners in a lumber company with Peter Herdic also as a partner. His daughter Encie married Mr.Herdic, then as a widow, to Henry Rawle.
