Robert Ben Hays
Robert Ben Hays (Rob) was born near Homedale, on the Wilder side of the river, with the help of a midwife on September 25th, 1925, and died peacefully with his family at his side on June 18, 2021.
His parents were Lee Bowman Hays and Eva Brown Hays. He had three sisters, Fay, Eulah, and Velma. Two brothers Lee and Carl. Rob was the youngest of his siblings. He was the last to pass away.
He met MaryLou Hill, the love of his life, at an outdoor skating park in Homedale in 1948. MaryLou was 19 and Rob 24 when they got married on July 20th, 1949. They had two sons, Robert Ray Hays and Allen Lee Hays.
He attended Last Chance school, on the corner of Hogg and Thompson Road, until eighth grade. Because of his father's poor health, he needed to quit school to help run the family farm. When he started farming, he had to use horses. Coalie, "was as black as could be", he would say and Blue was a blue roan. By the time he quit farming he had moved on to using tractors and other equipment to raise his cattle feed.
He milked cows for years and finally sold the herd after Allen, his last helper, left home. He started selling his grain to Simplots after that. On one trip to Simplots he had his grandson Josh sitting on his lap. He fell asleep and Josh was driving the truck. Josh was only seven or eight years old. Rob loved his Hereford cattle the best. He kept them for a year after his retirement. So he didn't officially retire until the beef cows were sold.
He also liked to help his brother and best friend Carl with his race horses. He ponied at home helping work out the horses and saddled at the track.
Baseball was his favorite sport and he spent hours playing and coaching. He and Mary Lou even had to hurry home after their wedding in Winnemucca so he could play in a baseball game. As a coach he coached his sons and grandkids and after his retirement enjoyed helping Jim McMillan with the girls softball team at Homedale high school. He was the girls hitting coach and loved every minute of it.He supported his boys and grandkids in all that they did. He traveled all over the United States and parts of Canada so he would not miss one of their sporting events. His first large airplane trip was to West Palm Beach Florida to watch his grandson Luke play in the National NAIA Tournament when he played for Albertson's College of Idaho.
He liked to fish. He fished Bully Creek, Antelope, Cascade and a little mud hole called Little Camas Reservoir.
As he got older, he would sit in his machine shed in the shade and wave at the people driving by the farm. He did get visitors pretty often also.
Rob is survived by his wife, MaryLou, his son Robert (Susan) Hays, his son Allen (Teri) Hays, 4 grandsons, 12 great grandkids and several nieces and nephews.
Rob was proceeded in death by his parents all of his siblings, an infant grandson and his daughter in law Marsha.
Rob was a friend to everyone he met and will be missed by many.
