Terry Joseph Conway, 74, passed away on Monday, June 21, 2021. Born in 1947, the son of Joseph and Gertrude Conway, he grew up in the same home he later raised his own family in. A graduate of Whitmer High School (class of '65), as a gas attendant at his father's station, he had an eye for one of his customers for whom he fell in love. He shared a marriage of 51 years with Regina (Dzenis) in which he never allowed her to pump her own gas or go a day without knowing he loved her.
Terry was a proud member of the U.S. Navy for which he served on the USS Independence and toured the Mediterranean before returning in 1969. Married in May of 1970, he and Regina welcomed their first daughter, Caroline, in the fall of 1971, and their second, Cynthia, in the spring of 1976. An old-fashioned father and fan of sci-fi classics, auto mechanics, monster cars and fixing things, they were Daddy's girls from the beginning to the end.
A service manager with Fyr-Fyter Sales & Service for more than 45 years, Terry was devoted to his work. He touched many lives, sharing his stories, his philosophies, and his lighthearted humor. The neighborhood knew the big van in the driveway, the gorgeous lawn, and a big dog or two on the front porch were his world.
Terry enjoyed traveling and spending time with his wife, Regina. They went antique hunting, road trips in the convertible, gardening and enjoying daily coffee or a sit on the front porch to watch it rain. Together they checked off his bucket list with dream trips to Alaska, Hawaii and cruises together with many beautiful sunsets and rum punch to share.
In 2002, Terry welcomed his first grandchild, and again his world changed. He marveled at the idea of being a grandfather. Upon Dylan's arrival, he made certain to get a specially engraved screwdriver the exact length of his first grandson to mark the special arrival. He was blessed again in 2004 with the arrival of his "goldilocks", granddaughter, Isabelle. Both children loved moments with Grandpa, making up stories, sharing meals, and learning tricks that only Grandpa could know.
He was loved by many and cherished by those who knew him well. Those who will miss him most include his wife, Regina (Dzenis), daughters, Caroline (Alexander) Mak and Cynthia (Thomas) Jacobs; and grandchildren, Dylan and Isabelle. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Gertrude Conway.
Friends and family will be received on Friday, June 25, 2021 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Avenue, Toledo, OH 43623 (419-841-2422). A Funeral Service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, June 26, 2021 beginning at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
