Lana Carter Larson of Carterville, Illinois, transitioned from this life into eternity on the first day of summer, June 21, 2021, the longest day of the year, just three minutes before sunset. At 8:19 pm, she was in her home, surrounded by her family, in a room filled with peace and love. Her close friend and physician, who had helped give her an additional decade of quality of life and sustained her through the last year and half of her illness had left her bedside for his last home visit only an hour before.

Lana was born to Robert V. and Idalene (Todd) Carter on September 21, 1952, in Wayne County, Illinois. She was raised in Fairfield, Illinois, graduating from Fairfield Community High School in 1970. After moving to southern Illinois to complete her Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education from SIUC, she relocated to the area permanently, purchasing her first home in Crainville, Illinois.

Lana met Glen Larson in the fall of 1973 at Faith Bible Tabernacle in Harrisburg, Illinois, while they were both students on the Carbondale campus. They married on December 22, 1979, a union of 41 years, which produced their three, redheaded children, Emily (Larson) Hayes (Aaron) of Carterville, Illinois and twin boys, Todd (Allison) of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Tyler (Katie) Larson of Indianapolis, Indiana.

In the space of thirty-five years, she and her husband, Glen, moved to two additional homes in Carterville, where they raised their children, the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s. Emily, Todd, and Tyler spent most of their childhoods riding bicycles without helmets and playing flashlight tag without adult supervision around their family home, in the heart of the Greenbriar Subdivision, on Meadowlark Drive.

Lana was preceded in death by her sister, Linda (Carter) Merrick in 2006 and Bob and Idalene Carter, in 2018 and 2016, respectively. She was also preceded in death by her grandparents, aunts, and uncles, as well as a long branch of women on her family tree, the maternal line that she and her daughter would come to know through decades of research— her grandmother, Ruth Todd, her great-grandmother Alpharetta Clark, the mother of Jenny and Beulah Clark, Alpharetta's mother, Margaret Jordan, and, finally, her fourth great grandmother, Melinda Tate, just to name a few. On June 21, Lana joined these pearls on a string of strong, persistent, unwavering women, full of faith and resilience.

Lana is survived by her husband, Glen, their three children, and their six grandchildren, the "apples of her eye," as she called them: Benjamin Hayes, son of Aaron and Emily Hayes, Gunnar and Lennox Larson, sons of Todd and Allison Larson, and Dylan, Owen, and Chloe Larson, children of Tyler and Katie Larson.

There is much we could write about Lana's life, her hobbies, her sense of humor, and even her stubborn streak mixed with a healthy dose of perfectionism, but all of these things seem to pale in comparison to her love for her family and her faith, a faith which was built on a rock in her early twenties, never shaking and so strong that those who knew her best knew that she had no fear of death. After Emily, Todd, and Tyler became adults, she and Glen cooked what is estimated to be over 800 Sunday lunches for their children and grandchildren, a small expression of her generosity and devotion to her family, those same people who were with her in the end.

Graveside services for Lana Larson will be at 12:30 on Sunday, June 27, 2021 at the cemetery across the street from Blooming Grove Baptist Church in Mcleansboro, Illinois, just down the hill from her grandparents' farm and only few yards away from the pond where generations of her family were baptized. A picnic lunch will follow her services, similar to the summer fare she would have prepared for us. All are welcome to attend, just as all were welcome at her dining room table.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests that donations be made to the Wayne County Historical Society in Fairfield, Illinois with the hopes that additional funding for digitization efforts will assist the society as they continue to help others discover their family roots, in the same way they helped springboard her research, so many years ago. Service arrangements were entrusted to Binkley- Ross Funeral Home under the direction of Joni Binkley- Ross and Monte Blue 618-997-7771. The Wayne County Historical Society Donations may be mailed to the funeral home at 1702 W. Boulevard Street, Marion, Illinois 62959 and they will be forwarded on to the family.
