Katherine "Katie" Marie (Iwen) Larsen

SIOUX FALLS – Katherine "Katie" Marie (Iwen) Larsen, 50, left us in the early hours of June 16, 2021. She left behind a legacy of love and support to all who knew her.

Katie, always the middle child, was adopted into the care of John F. Iwen and Verla Kay (Hemmingson) Iwen. She was born on December 23, 1970 in Great Falls, Montana. It was there that she was raised and grew into the thoughtful, caring person she was to become. She graduated from C.M. Russell High School in Great Falls in 1989. She was an active and avid musician and creative soul, performing in the school orchestra before going to the University of Montana on a music scholarship. She even played her string bass with the Great Falls symphony, further proof that neither her massive bass nor her signature 80's perm were going to overshadow her boundless talent.

While she was in school, she met her future husband, David Larsen, and they were later married in 1992. In the following year, they welcomed their first child, Jeffrey, to the world. Early in the following year, the two of them, with baby Jeff in tow, packed up their home and ventured to Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

She found herself graduating with a business degree from National American University in 1997, where she was surrounded by her family, who continued their tradition of being tremendously proud of her and her accomplishments. One of her greatest accomplishments came six years later, though, when in 2003 she welcomed her second child, Samuel, into the world. Together, Jeff and Sam carried on the torch of being goofy at every turn, as it is well known to all whom Katie knew that she was the funny one.

There were many things in life that brought her great joy; her many dogs she had throughout her lifetime (and truly any dogs at any time), her Mary Kay collection and fellow consultants with the organization, the exquisite meals and desserts she was capable of seemingly just whipping up at a moment's notice (she especially is a meatloaf connoisseur and fudge extraordinaire), the Denver Broncos (surely an indication of just how much she loved her children, that she would follow a team solely to be even a step closer to them both), her faith (which was very important to her and became her guiding light), candles, Dove chocolates, Coca Cola, and her very extensive and very impressive collection of Santa figurines and Christmas decorations. If Christmas is to signify the importance of family and love and generosity, then so must she be a beacon of those tenants as well.

Ask anybody that knew Katie and they will tell you that she was loving and caring, most especially and passionately when it came to her family and her children. They'll tell you how kind and generous she was. They'll tell you that she was so thoughtful and also had a card ready for you, no matter if it was a birthday or a holiday or just because. They'll tell you just how smart she was, and how resilient she had to be. They'll remind you of how courageous she was in the face of life's trials. They'll laugh as they remember how funny she was and smile as they remember how beautiful she was. Most of all, they'll tell you how much they are going to miss her and how much they loved her.

Katie was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her aforementioned loving and goofy children, Jeffrey Larsen and Samuel Larsen of Sioux Falls, SD; her supportive ex-husband, David Larsen of Sioux Falls, SD; her sister Jennifer Blossom (Ray Harrison) of Belgrade, MT and Sarah Rohret (Shaun Rohret) of Covington, WA.

Her remains will make themselves home to Great Falls, where she will be buried next to her mom and dad at Highland Cemetery, as was always her wish.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to NAMI, the National Alliance of Mental Illness, an organization dedicated to building better lives for those affected by mental illness. The family has requested that you hold your loved ones close and share a lemon meringue pie.
