dith M. Graves, 66 year resident of Glenwood, died Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at her home in Ridgewood Villa; she was 93. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, January 25th at Glenwood Lutheran Church with Rev. Randy Chrissis officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00 P.M. on Monday at the funeral home in Glenwood. Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.

Edith was born on the family farm in Bridgewater Township west of Northfield, Minnesota, on June 24, 1917, to her parents, Hans and Perlena (Tukvum) Halverson, and four older sisters. When she was two years of age, the family moved into Northfield, where she lived until she graduated from Northfield High School.

Edith followed her older sisters to Minneapolis to begin her career in business, holding various positions that led to her training and promotion to Claims Adjuster with Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, a position she held until her marriage and subsequent move to Glenwood.

She met Lyle Walter Graves of St. Cloud and Glenwood in June of 1940. What started with a blind date became a 54-year marriage that began on their wedding day, September 18, 1943. After World War II, they returned to Glenwood where Lyle had a teaching position. There they lived, worked, developed life-long friendships, and raised their three daughters, Diane, Janet Kay, and Patricia. Until last September, Edith still lived in the home on 2nd Avenue (formerly Chestnut Street) that they bought together in 1948.

As a member of the Glenwood community, Edith was an active and giving volunteer of her time and talents. Over the years, she was a Girl Scout leader and Council member, a member of the Hospital Auxiliary and the Legion Auxiliary, a Red Cross volunteer, and Election Board volunteer, and had many roles within Glenwood Lutheran Church from helping with projects in the church office to Alter Guild to active participation in Dorcas Society and in Circle particularly working in support of others for weddings and funerals and many functions in which Norwegian cooking and customs were involved.

A theme of family life for Edith has been camping and travel. From an 9x9 foot tent for five that was home for summer trips all through many of the States, to a camper, to a trailer that she and Lyle shared for many years in retirement (along with a big 4x4 truck that Edith loved to drive!), she experienced the outdoors and created wonderful memories. Over the last several years she made several more vacation trips in the States, traveled to two of her ancestral farms in Norway, and toured Germany with members of her family. Whenever and wherever her grandchildren had significant events in their lives from Wisconsin to South Carolina to Texas, Edith made the trip to join them and celebrate with them.

At home in Glenwood, other activities that filled Edith's busy life were golf, where she was a founding member of the Glenwood Golf Club's Women's League; bowling, for which she was attributed the status of "county's oldest bowler" at 92; gardening and food preservation; sewing, needlework, and crafts; reading; bridge, for which she was a member of numerous bridge clubs and groups over the years, and countless activities with and support for her friends.

Edith is survived by her daughters: Diane Lynn (David) Steele of Knightstown, IN, Janet Kay (Douglas) Tielbur of Marshfield, WI, Patricia Ann Graves of River Falls, WI, and surrogate daughter Lois Elizabeth Martin of River Falls, WI; grandchildren: Kristen Kay (Kevin) Giebel of Marshfield, WI, Drew Davies Steele of St. Louis, MO, Kalleen Halverson Steele (her namesake) of Harker Heights, TX, Derick Walter Graves and Alexander Jose' and Zachary Luis Martin of River Falls, WI; and great-grandchildren: Kari Ann and Kyle Robert Giebel of Marshfield, WI.

Edith was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle, her parents and five sisters, and her grandson, Robert Christopher Petersen.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Lyle W. and Edith M. Graves Memorial Scholarship Fund or the Glacial Ridge Hospital Foundation.
