In Loving Memory of Sylvia J. Baker - Our Precious Momma

On June 16, 2021, just past 8:30 in the evening, a mighty woman of God passed gently from this life into the arms of Jesus, her Savior and life-long companion and sustainer. We are confident that she has been enveloped in the love of her beloved husband and son. She is thoroughly enjoying being reunited with her parents, brothers, and sister, and she is now delighting in getting to know her infant child and grandson who were with us for only a short time here on earth.

Sylvia loved deeply and was deeply loved. She was full of compassion. She lived humbly and prayerfully. If you were a member of her family (no matter how extended) or one of her many friends, you were blessed to know that she was praying for you daily.

She ran with endurance and grace the race that was set before her and finished well.

Sylvia was born in Burning Springs, Kentucky, on July 26, 1930, to Casper and Helen (Goforth) Flinchum.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bobby C. Baker, her parents, her brothers, Marcus, Marvin, Glenn and George Flinchum, sister Joan Flinchum, an infant child, son Casper Baker, and grandson Kyle Richards.

Sylvia was a devoted mother to Tom (Linda) Baker, Alice (David) Richards, Rose (Wesley) Gainey, JoAnn (Kelly) Masterson, Jim (Mary) Baker and Casper Baker.

Sylvia was loved and adored by her grandchildren Jason (Lora), Bobby, and Jeffrey Richards, Megan (Brian) Moir, Kristen (James) Loft, Matthew Gainey, Mical (Darrell) Thompson, Wes (Tori) Masterson, Stephanie Baker, and Melissa (Sarah) Baker-Addison, her 15 great grandchildren, Elexis and Blake Richards, Ellie Moir, Olivia and Zeke Loft, Haddie, Bethel, Elisha, Miriam and Eve Thompson, Sophie and Tate Masterson, Alyssa Bauer, and Landon Baker-Addison, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews who knew her as "Aunt Silly".

Sylvia is survived by two devoted sisters, Joyce (Jim) Sanders and Peggy Flinchum-Fike who loved their sister like a second mother, and a loving sister-in-law, Shelby Flinchum.

Sylvia was a fervent follower of Christ. Her life was marked by unwavering faith in the goodness of God. Sylvia loved her church family at Sovereign Grace Baptist Church and her adopted church family at Redeemer Baptist Church.

Sylvia was a graduate of Silver Grove High School (Class of 1950) in Silver Grove, Kentucky. She attended Lexington Baptist Bible College in Lexington, Kentucky, with plans to be a foreign missionary. There she met Bobby Baker, a young seminary student. In addition to raising her children, Sylvia served faithfully as a Home Healthcare Nurse and was known for her care and dedication to her patients and their families. After retiring, she lovingly served as a 'nanny' for her grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at Sovereign Grace Baptist Church, 3175 N CR 900 E (corner of 900 E and Church Street), Brownsburg, Indiana, on Saturday, June 26. Family will gather at 11:30 a.m., followed by friends at 12:00 p.m. The Memorial Service will begin at 1:00 p.m. Her ashes will be interned at Grandview Cemetery in Mentor, Kentucky, alongside her beloved husband, at a later date.
