Born in Rahway, she was raised in Woodbridge and resided in Colonia for many years before moving to Red Bank 11 years ago.
Mrs. Lucas was a 1950 graduate of Woodbridge High School, after which she attended secretarial school. She was employed as a secretary to Thomas Desmond, principal of Woodbridge High School, for several years. After raising six children, she worked as a secretary for the Diocese of Metuchen at Saint Cecelia's Catholic Church in Iselin. Mrs. Lucas also worked for 16 years at Eastmont Orchards in Colts Neck.
She was an active communicant of Saint Cecelia's Catholic Church, Iselin, where she belonged to the Altar Rosary Society, was a dedicated worker for many years at the Iselin Fair, and worked counting collections; she also belonged to Saint James Catholic Church, Red Bank.
A true Jersey girl, Phyllis adored spending time with family on the beaches of Long Beach Island. She also enjoyed baking and was often seen bringing brownies, coffee cakes, and Irish soda bread to friends, in times of both celebration and sympathy. Phyllis was an avid sports fan, particularly of the NY Giants, Yankees and Villanova Wildcats basketball.
Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lawrence S. Lucas, in 2009; and her parents, Alfred and Kathyrn Romond Coley, she was survived by her children, Thomas Lucas(and his wife, Michele), Kathryn Martinak (and her husband, Bill), Christopher Lucas, Beth Lucas, Kerry Kilbride (and her husband, Bill), and Brian Lucas (and his wife, Susannah); her brother, John Coley; her grandchildren, Matthew, Molly, Joseph, Ashley, Christopher, Dylan, Katherine, Abigail, Benjamin, Eleanor, Henry and Samuel; and her great-grandchildren, Colton, Logan, Aria, Christopher, and Luna.
Funeral services held on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 from Costello-Greiner Funeral Home, 44 Green Street, Woodbridge, NJ. A Funeral Liturgy followed at Saint Cecelia's Catholic Church, 45 Wilus Way, Iselin, NJ, followed by interment in Saint James Cemetery, Woodbridge.
