Nelson Roy Smith
November 18, 1934 - June 11, 2021

Nelson Roy Smith, 86, had a long history of reading and clipping obituaries, especially from his hometown of Lucedale, Mississippi, and so he deserves more than just a list of facts in his own obituary (someone please clip this).

Nelson was born in Wisner, Louisiana to Mable Clarice (Neal) Smith and Roy Lee Smith, who along with his beloved sister, Laura Ann Childress, preceded him in death.

He finished high school in Lucedale before moving to Mobile, AL and meeting his wife, Ruby Christine (Chris) Davis at Brookley AFB where they both worked. Chris preceded him in death (2008) after 52 years of marriage.

Nelson and Chris had two sons in Mobile before transferring to Kelly AFB San Antonio in 1967. Allan Smith, (Kim); granddaughter Lindsay (Travis) Nefford, great-grand daughters Ellie & Addie Nefford. Rick Smith (Tina, deceased), granddaughter Nicole (Erich) Langston and great-granddaughter, their expected baby girl, whom Nelson learned of just two weeks before his death.

Also surviving Nelson are his dear nephew Freddy Jo Duncan (Faye) and many members of Chris' family who loved him dearly.

Nelson made friends easily and kept them for a lifetime. His memory was phenomenal. He loved to tell stories and really loved it when people listened. He was liked by everyone. In his later years, Nelson became close to God through his Sunday School class and Community Bible Church. He enjoyed and cared for his neighbors and found the loneliness of the COVID-19 pandemic especially hard. Nelson will be greatly missed, even by the pets and wild animals in his neighborhood, whom he fed daily.

In remembrance of our friend and father, Nelson, be of good spirit, be sincere, visit with your neighbors, speak and smile to everyone, enjoy even the tough days, recycle with a vengeance, save, don't rush, love God, cherish family, and dance in the sunshine.

Graveside services will be Monday, June 21, 2021, 10 am, at Mission Park North Cemetery, 20900 IH-10 West, exit #552. Friends and family are invited to gather for lunch following the service to visit, tell stories, and celebrate Nelson's life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
