Missouri Governor, U.S. Senator. Born in Quitman, Missouri, he graduated from the University of Missouri, in 1904, its law school in 1907 was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in St. Louis, Missouri. He also was city attorney of Webster Groves, a suburb of St. Louis. In 1941, he was elected as a Republican the 40th Governor of Missouri, serving until 1945. After his term, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving (1945-51). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law and retired in 1956. He served as president of the University of Missouri Alumni Association until his death at age 95 in St. Louis, Missouri.
