Thomas Madden said there were four things he found most important: his Family, his law enforcement career, his service in the US Navy during WWII, and his volunteer service. He cherished each making his a rich, full life.

Born in Brooklyn, New York on May 11, 1920 to humble beginnings, he was the eighth of nine children born to Mary and John Madden. Always proud of his work, Tom would be quick to share that he started working at the age of five, carrying coal into the house to fire the furnace, and that he's been working ever since. He dreamed of being a policeman, and worked hard to make that a reality. Shortly before the outbreak of WWII, he joined the Port Authority of New York's Transit Police. After the outbreak of war, he enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to the USS Alcor, a supply ship bound for service in the Pacific. A sea-sick sailor, Tom's Naval career as Quartermaster took him from Portland, Maine through the Panama Canal, Hawaii, the South Pacific, the South China Sea and many other ports of call. He witnessed the Leyte Gulf invasion and the Battle of Leyte Gulf, where the Japanese first widely deployed Kamikaze planes. Thankfully, he returned safely.

When Tom returned to Brooklyn, he joined the NYPD in 1946 and was assigned to the traffic division. He went to college at night to make Sergeant in 1949 and Lieutenant in 1950 upon graduation. Also during this time, he and his wife, Virginia, adopted two young girls, Kim and Barbara, and raised them in the Catholic tradition at St. Jerome's parish. By the 1960s, as adjutant for the Police Commissioner's office, worked tirelessly to root out corruption. He often said, this was his greatest police work. While working for the Commissioner, he was able to meet many heads-of-state, celebrities and world-leaders that visited New York, and got to know them one-on-one during his details. Tom retired from the NYPD with the rank of Inspector in 1973, and then continued his law enforcement career at the Sussex County prosecutor's office for another ten years. Tom and Virginia helped his young daughter Barbara raise his grandson, Scott, watched Kim get married and start a family, and visited Seattle for the first time. In early 1986 Virginia, his wife of 44 years was stolen away by cancer. In late 1994, after a short time in Florida, Tom reunited with his family now living in Seattle. He soon joined St. Anne's parrish.

While doting over his grandchildren, Conor, Caitlin and Molly, Tom sang in the church choir, and volunteered at the rectory. He was blessed with his great-granddaughter Madden (his namesake) in 1997, who he would watch grow for the next 17 years. He also met his loving wife, Barbara at a swimming class here in Seattle. They were wed just before his 80th birthday in Hawaii. They have spent the last 15 years together enjoying travel, gardening, good food and drink, Chloë Cat, friends, family and—most of all— each other.

When Molly was in the 2nd grade, Tom began his volunteer career as a reader assistant at St. Anne's School. This was a twice-weekly ritual of love and faith that continued for another 15 years, and only ceased because his eyesight failed him. During this time, he helped shape the faith of many young students, preparing many for their First Holy Communion. As a result, he was named Distinguished Volunteer of the Year in 2013— which he felt was one of the great achievements of his adult life.

He loved all things, unconditionally, and the whole world loved him back. He is now basking in the light of God and is wrapped in eternal joy.

Sail on, sailor.
