Walter John Barrett, 81, died Tuesday at 10:16 p.m. at a Cedar Rapids hospital. A farmer, he had lived near Marion and Viola until he went to Olin 18 months ago. He was a member of the Viola Methodist church.
Born at Norfolk, England, he came to the United States and Iowa in 1888. A year later he went back to England, was married to Esther Baldwin and returned to Iowa with his bride. Mrs. Barrett died at Olin in 1933. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Rachel Pye, Morley; Mrs. Agnes Mitchell, Independence; Mrs. Rhoda Satterly, Olin; Mrs. Mable Schlemmer, Lisbon, and Audrey Barrett, Cedar Rapids; two sons, Arthur Barrett, Cedar Rapids, and Melvin Barrett, Portland, Ore.; 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at the Yocom chapel, where friends may call. The Rev. Charles Arnold, Methodist pastor at Lisbon, will officiate and burial will be in Oak Shade cemetery.
