He took the surname of de Burgh in lieu of that of Bourke by Royal Warrant 1752; FRS 1753; FSA 1753; Privy Councillor [I] 1761 for eight days only.
He died in April 1782 at Portumna Castle, County Galway and was buried in the Dominican friary, Athenry. He was succeeded by his sons Henry de Burgh, 12th Earl and then John de Burgh, 13th Earl of Clanricarde.
