Roger was born in Lexington, Virginia on November 18, 1955, a son of the late Eugene Thornton and Mabel (Harris) Thornton Barnette.
Mr. Thornton graduated from Buffalo Gap High School and retired from the Augusta County Public Schools where he was employed for over eighteen years. He enjoyed his old cars and sitting around and talking with his buddies.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Thornton was preceded in death by a brother, Delmas Thornton.
Surviving in addition to his wife of forty-four years, is a son, Michael Thornton and his wife, Niki; a daughter, Regina Hanger and her husband, Stacey; five grandchildren, Hailey Hanger, Mckenzie Thornton, Wayne Hanger, Wyatt Hanger, and Ethan Thornton; two sisters, Dorothy Ingram and her husband, Bill and Mary White and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends anytime at the residence. A celebration of life will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 15, 2021 in the Little River Church of the Brethren by Pastor Lloyd Via. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Basil Karr, Curney Campbell, Harold Sumner, Stacey Hanger, Randy Campbell, Raymond Campbell, Edgar Campbell, and William Campbell.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Roger's memory to Alzheimer's Association, Central and Western Virginia Chapter, 355 Rio Road, Suite 102, Charlottesville, Virginia 22901 and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105.
