Orphia I. Sullivan Akaiwa, of Bloomington, Indiana, and Southampton, New York, was born February 12, 1918, in Williamson County, Tennessee. She passed away November 8, 2007, at The Residence at McCormick's Creek in Spencer, Indiana.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Mortimer Akaiwa; parents Anna Walker Sullivan and Andrew Albert Sullivan. Sisters: Madeline Sullivan Wallace, Vella Sullivan Pegram. Brothers: Irvin Leslie Sullivan, Hubert Ezra Sullivan, Orvil Buel Sullivan, Harold Lewis Sullivan and Othel Hardin Sullivan.

She is survived by her daughter, Harriet Florence Akaiwa; son, Frank Ernest Akaiwa; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Cooke, and grandchildren; twins: Jonathan Ernest Cooke-Akaiwa, and Benjamin Ralph Cooke-Akaiwa and Abigail Rae Cooke-Akaiwa. Sisters: Allie Sullivan Burke, Vesta Sullivan Griswold, Wilma Sullivan Jeffreys and numerous nephews, nieces and great nephews and nieces.

Following World War II, Orphia joined her husband, a career Army warrant officer, in post-war Europe. For the next 20 years, they served several tours of duty in Italy and Germany. She valued those years overseas. For much of this time she taught school on these Army bases. An artist at heart, Orphia was a very accomplished painter and has left her family a large body of beautiful oil paintings.

Funeral will be held at the Phillips-Robinson Funeral Home, 2707 Gallatin Road, Nashville, TN. November 13 with visitation at 9 a.m., services following at 10 a.m. Internment will be in the Nashville National Military Cemetery on Gallatin Road, where her husband is buried.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be sent to either the Alzheimer's Association or your local arts council.
