Merrill Brayton Brown was the last child born to Benjamin Franklin Brown (1844-1888) and Lucinda Ann Brayton Brown (1847-1881) on 19 Feb 1881 in Magnolia, Logan, Harrison, Iowa. In 1885, when a young lad, he recalled in a letter written about 1961 that he watched the Otoe Indians walk past his home on their way to get supplies while they lived Nebraska.
His mother, Lucy, died due to complications with his birth. Mary Jane (BRAYTON) Andrews (Lucy Ann's sister) was a widow with grown children at the time of Lucy's death and attended Lucy at Merrill's birth. Mary Jane married B. F. BROWN in 1881 and helped raise Lucy and Benjamin's children. The young children had been placed in a Lutheran orphanage until Mary Jane returned to Minburn, IA and then raised Merrill until he finished 8th grade. They did not have children of their own. Mary Jane, Benjamin and the 6 children moved to Barneston, Gage, Nebraska where B. F. was active in politics (elected 1st supervisor and on the school board). He owned a hardware/implement store in both Barneston, Gage County and in Fairbury, Jefferson County, NE. He was elected the first county clerk of Perkins, NE but died from a stroke while making his acceptance speech (1888). His body was brought back to Logan, IA and buried next to his wife Lucinda Ann.
Merrill held several jobs across the country. He was a cattle driver (Texas to Montana), homesteaded land near Williston, MT, worked as a long shoreman, and owned his own business, Sanitox, in Oaklawn, IL (sanitary supplies) servicing schools and the like.

Merrill married Vera Victoria Mobley (1904-1977) on 14 Feb 1925 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. They had two children: Benjamin Franklin BROWN (1925-2011) and Mary Jane Brown (1931- ) Merrill died on 13 Jul 1963 in Hot Springs, Garland, Arkansas and is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery.
