Susan Leigh Horne

Knoxville - Susan Leigh Horne passed away suddenly on June 10, 2021 from complications from a diabetic coma. She was surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was 48. Susan was born on February 25, 1973 to Huey Lee "Sam" and Sue Horne. She was a vivacious and outgoing child who made friends as easily as she made people laugh. Susan's love and commitment to family was evident from an early age. During the 1980's, Susan was a known and respected figure in Knoxville's emerging ice skating scene, as well as in National Competitions. She trained under the legendary professional skater Robert Unger at the Ice Chalet in Bearden and she also spent summers training in Lake Placid, New York. Susan's athleticism, power and grace made her a force to be reckoned with on the ice. So much so, she trained with skaters much older than herself. Her kindness, compassion, generosity and unparalleled sense of humor endeared her to everyone on and off the ice. The relationships Susan forged during these years have lasted a lifetime. They also embodied a sense of community that was integral to the success of the Ice Chalet. "My beautiful friend lost her fight this morning. Always the most positive person in the room, always spreading sunshine wherever you went. The Ice Chalet was a better place with you there. Oh, the fun through the years! You will be forever missed, Susan Horne. Fly high with your momma and daddy now." - Andi Krug Teter - June 11, 2021 Susan graduated from South-Young High School in 1991. She attended the University of Tennessee and graduated from Tusculum University in 1998, with a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Management. Susan parlayed her degree and her exceptional relationship building skills into a successful career in sales. It was never a job that would define her, but instead it was the many relationships she amassed while marching her way through life. Susan never met a challenge that could eclipse her light. She shined brightly on everything and everyone until the day she died, never understanding or appreciating the inspiration she was to so many. She was proceeded in death by parents, Huey Lee "Sam" Horne and Sue Horne; grandparents, Sam and Viola Horne, Ruth Turner and Lawrence Turner. She is survived by her aunt, Sandra Bertelkamp (Hank); uncle, Larry Turner (Marta); aunt, Julie Houston; cousins, John Fiser, David Fiser (Wendy), Caroline Osborne (John), Matthew Turner (Christy), Lara Dennison (Brian), Lauren Adams, Lindsay Webb (Michael), and their many children that were all so special to Susan. The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Kristy Duff, Susan's best friend and ice skating team mate. The Family will receive friends Tuesday, June 15, 2021 from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM in the chapel of Berry Funeral Home, 3704 Chapman Hwy, Knoxville, TN 37920, funeral service to follow at 7:00 PM. Rev. Don Wilson officiating. Family and friends will meet at Berry Funeral Home, Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at 9:15 AM for a funeral procession to Woodlawn Cemetery for a 10:00 AM graveside service. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Sevier Heights Baptist Church 3140 Maloney Road. Knoxville, TN 37920 or the charity of your choice
