DUNCAN, Edith Spillman Kenney

Edith Spillman Kenney Duncan was born to Euclid Spillman and Kathryn Lynch Spillman on October 8, 1917, in Vickery,(sic) Texas. She passed away on August 23, 2015, at home in Dallas, Texas.

Edith attended Vickery High School and was valedictorian of her senior class. She earned her B.A. degree in 1937 at East Texas State Teachers College (now Texas A&M University at Commerce). She was married to Archie Kenney from 1937 until his death in 1968. They had two daughters: Loma Von Kenney Stooksberry and Peggy Joy Kenney Alexander.

Edith was married to Herman Duncan from 1970 until his death in 2004.

In addition to the deaths of her parents and husbands, Edith suffered the loss of her daughter and son-in-law, Loma and Stan Stooksberry, her brothers Dwight and Gene Spillman and her sister Bettye Henderson.

During World War II Edith worked for Chemical Warfare Procurement, and later for Walter H. Allen Wholesale Hardware. She was on the staff of Southern Methodist University from 1953 until her retirement in 1983. Among her titles were secretary to the President and Administrative Assistant to the Dean of Dedman College.

Edith and Herman enjoyed attending church together, traveling, boating, fishing, and square dancing. Edith volunteered as a receptionist at a hospital, tutor at an elementary school, helper in a church food pantry and in a branch of the public library. Edith was a member of the Preston Road Church of Christ for more than forty years, then of Skillman Church of Christ since 1991. She was a long-time member of the Times Review Class book club. Edith said her pride was in watching her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren develop into beautiful human beings.

Edith enjoyed a warm relationship with Herman's children, Wayne and Glenda Duncan of Monroe, Louisiana, and Martha and Dan Jobe of Hawkins, Texas, and their families.
