Mendon Dispatch, May 19, 1892 --, Loraine-- Our community was again shocked last Wednesday morning by the report that Fernando Banks, living 1 1/2 miles from Loraine, was killed by being kicked by a horse. ---Later, it was learned that he was not dead. The facts in the case are about as follows.
Oh Wednesday morning Mr. Banks and Mr. Chris Seals, on whose farm Mr. Banks lived, and a Mr. Dearwester undertook to break some young horses to work. They had driven one a few miles and were preparing to hitch up another, which Mr. Banks had harnessed in the morning before the other men had arrived. They took it out into the lot with a rope and while pulling it, it instantly whirled and kicked, striking Banks on the right side of the head, breaking the skull. It was done in an instant. This happened about 9:30 o'clock Wednesday morning. He was carried to the house and died 12 hours later. He never regained consciousness. Dr. Christie, of Quincy, was called and removed several pieces of skull. Deceased was 34 years of age and leaves a wife and two small children to mourn his untimely end.
Mr. Banks was a good citizen and an upright man. His funeral was preached by the Rev. Mr. Miller, of this place on Friday morning, after which his remains were turned over to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of which he was a worthy member, and were laid to rest in our cemetery. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved widow in this sad affliction.
