Dwayne Melton Cox, born 29 Mar 1943, 61, of East Palatka, died Monday, August 9, 2004 at his home at 131 W St Johns Terra, East Palatka, FL, 32131
A native of DeQueen, Ark., he had resided in Putnam County since 1967, coming from Fayetteville, Ark. Dwayne was a 1967 graduate of the University of Arkansas, where he played football. Over the past 37 years, he had coached five sports beginning as a football assistant at Palatka Senior High School in 1967 and continuing at Palatka South High School, where he coached football, track and golf. After a brief period in private business, he returned to coaching in 1982 at Interlachen High School, where he coached track, softball, cross country and was head football coach from 1987-1993 when a health condition forced him to give up football. He was named the Florida Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1996, and in 1999 he led Interlachen High School to its only district softball championship. Dwayne was also an avid and skilled fisherman. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Palatka.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Milton F. "Mutt" Cox and Minnie Mildred Emerson Cox; and a sister: Willie Jean Simer.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years: Sylvia Cox; a daughter: Chrissie Cox of Palatka; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Curtis and Donna Cox and Leroy and Betty Cox, all of DeQueen, Ark.; numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions to be made in his memory to the Interlachen High School Athletic Department, 126 N. CR 315, Interlachen, FL 32148.
The family will receive friends from 5:50-6:45 p.m. with memorial services celebrating Dwayne's life at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12 at First Baptist Church of Palatka with Dr. Pat Davidson and C.L. Overturf Jr. officiating.
