{ Obituary - Published in GoSanAngelo, San Angelo, TX from Jun. 9 to Jun. 11, 2021 }

Craig David Payne departed this world on Saturday, May 15, 2021, at Missouri City, Texas. He was born in Limestone, Maine on September 30, 1955, the day James Dean died.

Craig grew up a child of the sixties in a military family, living and traveling in the US and foreign countries. As a boy, Craig often hung with older boys but, although younger, often became the leader of whatever pack he ran with because he was usually the toughest kid in the neighborhood, and he was fearless.

He was a talented baseball player, a pitcher gifted beyond his young years. To his little brother it seemed Craig had major league stuff, including inside and outside curves, a wicked slider, and a sneaky change-up. Craig was also a gifted artist and musician. A self-taught guitarist, Craig played blazing, soulful leads in several rock bands over his years and maintained a lifelong love of guitars, music and performance.

Craig was preceded in death by his father, Norman Payne.

He is survived by his mother, Yvette Payne; daughter, Sarah Alam; grandchildren, Adriyan and Asyia; best friend, Carol Payne; sister, Lynette Fanguy and brother-in-law George Fanguy; sister, Sandy Carver and brother-in-law Paul Carver; and brother, Don Payne and sister-in-law Jody White.

While among us, Craig was troubled and the paths he chose were often difficult for him and hard on those who loved him. Over the years, many of us reached out to him with love and support. After many years, some of us, although we loved him, may have given up on Craig, but some were there for him until the last. We ask God's mercy, forgiveness, and reconciliation, according to His will, for Craig and each of us.

A gathering in remembrance of Craig will take place on June 12, 2021 at 2:30 at the First Baptist Church in Beasley, Texas. Our humble thanks to Carol and her sister, Rose Jensen, Sarah, Brenda Stelzel, Chris and Shae Allison, and all who have given their love, time, and support in arranging this memorial gathering for Craig's family and friends. We pray that Craig will be among us there and will find peace beyond.
