Robert L. Hammond, age 85 of Boone, IA passed onto his heavenly home on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at the Boone County Hospital with his family by his side.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, June 14, 2021 at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets in Boone. Inurnment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, west of Boone.

Bob was the son of Wallace H. Hammond Sr. and Hazel (Setzer) Hammond, born in Peru, NE on July 29, 1935. He graduated from Boone High School in 1953. In 1955, he joined the Navy, where he was stationed in San Diego, CA. On April 2, 1956, he was united in marriage to Ardith Burton of Ogden, IA at the Ogden Methodist Church. The couple made their home in California until moving back to Boone in 1959. After the move he held various jobs, and eventually retired from the Chicago Northwestern Railroad.

Bob was an avid ISU fan. He could often be spotted in his cardinal and gold attire. Along with his support for the Cyclones, he passionately supported his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He rarely missed one of their activities. He enjoyed hunting (birds), fishing (for bass) and playing golf with his son and many of his friends; as well as, attending performances at CY Stephens Auditorium with his wife. He loved the outdoors and being in nature, growing various flowers and watching the wildlife (especially hummingbirds). And he always had a joke to tell.

Bob was on the Freedom Rock Committee and involved with the commissioning for Boone County. He was also involved in Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, V.F.W., Kiwanis, and the Elks.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Wallace Hammond Jr. and Charles Hammond; sister, Marge (Hammond) Moffitt; son, Brian Hammond; and his in-laws, Maurice and Alice Burton and Eddie Burton.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ardith Hammond; daughters, Cindy (Mike) Carpenter of Boone and Tammy (Kent) Reimers of Ogden; grandchildren, Jennifer (Dennis) Wood of Boone, Jon Carpenter of Boone, Cam (Hannah) Reimers of Kelley, IA, Taryn (Nate Reichter) of Alta, IA, Matt Hammond and Jeremy Hammond, both of Colorado; great grandchildren, Austin Harvey, Tanner Harvey, Jake Reutter, Hunter Reimers and Renae Reichter; a great-great grandchild, Elijah Harvey and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets in Boone. Online condolences may be left to Bob's family at www.schroedermemorialchapel.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Boone County Freedom Rock by visiting www.boonecountyfreedomrock.com.
