Professional Football Player, Coach. Born Richard Charles Nolan in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He played at the defensive back position for nine seasons (1954 to 1962) in the National Football League, with the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys. He was member of the 1956 NFL Champion Giants team. Prior to his NFL career in which he appeared in 99 regular season games, he played collegiate football at Maryland. After retiring as a player, Nolan coached for eleven seasons (1968 to 1975, 1978 to 1980) in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints. His son Mike Nolan is coach of the 49ers as of 2007. He died of complications from Alzheimer's disease and prostate cancer.
