Dick spent his free time as a teenager dreaming of flying and building model airplanes. He was graduated from Kensington High School and attended Buffalo State for two years. This allowed him to enlist as a Naval Aviation Cadet, in Pensacola, FL. Rather than be drafted in the Army.
