Byron C. "Chip" Burns, 72, died June 6, 2021 in his Spring Township residence.
Born in Reading, PA on May 17, 1949, he was a son of the late Franklin Burns and Celia S. (Hain) Burns-Shuman.
Chip was a 1967 graduate of Wilson High School and a graduate of the Pennsylvania State Police Academy.
He was employed a number of years as a patrolman with the Township of Spring Police Department.
Chip was later employed for over 20 years as a security guard with the former Lucent Technology, Muhlenberg Township, until his retirement in 2001.
After retirement, he worked part-time for a number of years as a service technician with Mid-Atlantic Fire and Air.
Chip joined and volunteered with the West Wyomissing Fire Company in 1969. He started as a firefighter and worked his way up the ranks to Asst. Chief and the Asst. Chief Engineer until the Township fire companies merged in 2003. Following the merger, he stayed on as the Asst. Chief Engineer until his retirement from the fire company in 2014.
He also served a number of terms as the Relief Association Treasurer for both the West Wyomissing and Township of Spring Fire Departments.
Chip was a life member of the West Wyomissing Fire Company Social Member and was a charter member of the Red Knights Motorcycle Club, Berks County PA Chapter 10.
He loved cooking, golfing, riding his Harley-Davidson Road King, and most importantly spending time with his grandchildren.
Chip is survived by his son, Chad F., husband of Jamie Lee (Stanley) Burns of Spring Township.
He was affectionately known as "Pop-Pop Chipper" to two grandsons: Jordon J., and Dylan J. Burns.
Other survivors include two siblings: Michael Y., husband of Laura (Kaplan) Burns and Patricia J. (Burns) Ritter, all of Tuscan, Arizona and several nieces and nephews: Tammy Ritter, Lisa Ritter, Gregory Burns, Steven Burns, and Erin Kaplan.
A visitation will be held Saturday, June 19th from 9:00 am – 10:00 AM, with a memorial service beginning at 10:00 AM in the Township of Spring Fire Company, 2301 Monroe Avenue, Spring Township.
Burial will be in St. John's Gibraltar Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Red Knights PA Chapter 10 and mailed to 2115 Cleveland Avenue, West Lawn, PA 19609.
