Obituary of Carl Ogletree George
Carl O. George, 96, of Gadsden, AL, passed away on Saturday, June 5, 2021. A funeral service will be held at 2:00p.m. on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at Collier-Butler Chapel. Burial will follow at Crestwood Cemetery. Rev. Billy York will officiate. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00p.m. until the hour of the service at the funeral home on Wednesday. Carl was born on May 9, 1925, in Valdosta, Georgia. He attended Valdosta High School where he was co-captain of their football team in his senior year. After graduating from high school he served in the United States Navy from 1943-1946. He went on to play football for Coach Wally Butts at the University of Georgia. Carl played for the Bulldogs from 1946-1948, playing in the Sugar Bowl, Gator Bowl, and Orange Bowl. He retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company after 36 years of service. There he met his wife, Evelyn (Milam) George. He was inducted into the Valdosta/Lowndes County (Georgia) Sports Hall of Fame in 1985. Carl enjoyed Georgia football, Atlanta Braves baseball, gardening, fishing, and spoiling his grandkids. He had a gentle and giving spirit that touched many lives. He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Mr. George was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Marie George; parents, Mittie George and Hugh George; brother, H.B. (Margaret) George; stepson, Joseph DiPaola; son-in-Law, Mark Sockwell; and granddaughter, Taylor Marie Connell. Carl is survived by his daughters, Denise Sockwell and Carla (Brian) Connell; and grandchildren, Austin (Marcy) Sockwell, Tyler Sockwell, and Erika Connell. Pallbearers will be Austin Sockwell, Tyler Sockwell, Brian Connell, Greg Bain, and Doyle Payne. The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff at Coosa Valley Health and Rehab, especially Carol, Katie, and Stephanie, Meadowood Retirement Home, Southern Care New Beacon Hospice, and Doctor Akisanya and staff.
