Actor. He will be remembered for playing 'Linc Hayes' in the television series "The Mod Squad" (1968 to 1973). Born into a family of professional musicians, his grandfather Clarence Williams was a prominent jazz pianist. He served as a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army and following his discharge, he was discovered by Hollywood which led to his motion picture debut with a minor role in the film "Pork Chop Hill" (1959). He made an impression on the Broadway stage playing 'Randall' in the production "Slow Dance on the Killing Ground" (1964 to 1965) which earned him a Theatre World Award and a Tony Award nomination. He appeared in the TV series "Daktari" and "Tarzan" prior to being cast in his famed role as the hippie cop 'Linc Hayes' during the entire run of the series "The Mod Squad." He went on to appear in the Broadway production "Night and Day" (1979 to 1980) in addition to a wide range of films and TV programs including the Prince film "Purple Rain" (1984) "52 Pick-Up" (1986) and "Hoodlum" (1997) . He was formerly married to actress Gloria Foster. He died from colon cancer.
