Mark Ware Sanders passed away on Sunday, May 30th after a valiant battle with cancer. He touched many lives with his gentle spirit and positive outlook on life.
Mark was born on Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. With a father in the Air Force, Mark travelled extensively with his mother, father, sister, and brother and lived in Illinois, England, Maryland, Nebraska, and lastly in California where his father retired from the Air Force. Mark graduated from Redwood High School in Marin County then proudly served in the U.S. Army for 6 years including two tours in Germany.
Following his service in the military, Mark worked as a seasonal firefighter before becoming a permanent fire fighter with the Marin County Fire Department. Mark enjoyed a 25-year career with the Marin County Fire Department. He achieved the rank of Captain, serving at the Hicks Valley and Tomales Stations, before retiring in 2007. His career as a fire fighter was adventurous as he and his team travelled to fight several large forest fires in the western United States.
Mark enjoyed many activities in his life including attending concerts, vacationing and scuba diving in Mexico and Hawaii, skiing in the Sierra, fishing in Lake Tahoe for Mackinaw with his brother-in-law, and playing golf with his many friends in Petaluma and later at Sun City Roseville where he enjoyed the last 6 years of his life.
Mark is survived by his sister, Mary Hyams of San Rafael, CA, and his brother, Jim Sanders of Walnut Creek, CA. Other relatives who care dearly for Mark are his brother-in-law, Milt Hyams, sister-in-law, Toni Sanders, nieces Myra Hyams and Jenny Tomlin, and nephews, Milt Hyams Jr., Mike Hyams, and Matt Sanders. His generous spirit will be missed by all who knew him.
Any donations in Mark's name should be made to Hope Hospice. The family is so appreciative and thankful to their staff who provided care for Mark this past 6 months.
In accordance with Mark's wishes there will be no funeral and a private interment service will be held at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery.
