Irene Opal Gilbertson was born June 9, 1916, at the farm home near Raub. She was the oldest daughter of Dort and Clara Myers. She graduated as salutatorian from Underwood High School in 1933, attended Minot State College for a year and began teaching in the rural schools of McLean County. During this time, she served as 4H leader and member of the county 4H council. She was the rural correspondent for McLean County Independent and wrote feature articles for them. She earned her life certificate in 1942 and her BS in elementary education in 1975 from Minot State, 42 years after she began her college career. Irene taught at White Shield school for 8 years and at Parshall Elementary School for 9 years. She retired in the spring of 1976 after 29 years of teaching.
Irene married George Gilbertson on June 13, 1944 at Havre, Montana. They farmed in the Binford ND area until 1948 when they moved to the Parshall area. For more than 18 years, Irene was in charge of the book work and the plantings at the Parshall Community Cemetery and was proud of how beautiful it was for a final resting place. She also enjoyed research and writing. She entered over 200 biographies for publication in the McLean County History Book, worked on the history of the Parshall School, the second volume of Mountrail County History, and worked on a committee to rewrite the Parshall community history. She and George loved to travel, seeing much of the US and even spending time in Norway with relatives. Irene's inability to walk without aid brought her to the nursing home in Parshall in January, 1995. George joined her there in November, 1995, and died February 22, 1999.
Survivors: sons Arlen (Ronna) and Garrett (Vicky) both of Parshall; daughters Jan (Herb) Jones, Overland Park, Kansas and Barb (Christopher) Becker, LeMars, Iowa; 8 grandchildren; brothers, L.K. –Bud (Adell) Myers, Big Sandy, Montana, and James (Peggy) Myers, Parshall; sisters Dorothy (Gordon) Lyon, Minot, Lois Myers, Havre, Montana, and Eunice Berry, Havre, Montana; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
