Actor. He is best remembered for his role as the bigoted character 'Archie Bunker' in the CBS television situation comedy series "All in the Family" (1971 to 1979) and "Archie Bunker's Place" (1979 to 1983), as well as the southern Police Chief 'Bill Gillespie' in the NBC/CBS television crime drama "In the Heat of the Night" (1988 to 1995).
