Russell Hill

December 22, 1924 - December 30, 2020

Russell Eugene Hill died at his daughter Cheryl's home in Ashland, Oregon, on December 30, 2020.

Russ, as he was known to his family and friends, was born on December 22, 1924 in Vincent, Iowa. The second of eight kids, he captivated his grandchildren and great-grandchildren with stories of growing up on the farms, woods, and area surrounding Fort Dodge. Russ joined the Navy in 1942 and spent much of his service in the South Pacific delivering decoded messages to the "top brass." After being discharged, Russ married Jean Jestes on February 17, 1946. They moved to Norwalk, California where Russ worked 40 years as a carpenter. They had two daughters, Cheryl and Christie. In 1997, Russ and Jean moved to Folsom, California. He moved to Pioneer Village in Jacksonville, Oregon in 2017.

Besides being an avid storyteller, Russ enjoyed camping, fishing, reading the newspaper, and building anything and everything. He shared those pastimes with his family.

Russ is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Bob Therkelsen, two grandchildren and their spouses (Kristin and Matthew Beers and Peter and Jessica Therkelsen), and four great grandchildren (James and Luke Beers, and Soren and Sage Therkelsen). Christie died from cancer less than two months before her father died.

Russ is buried next to Jean and Christie in Mountain View Cemetery, Ashland, Oregon.
