David was the sixth child of Jerrold "Jerry" Willis Hatfield and Gladys Marie Likes Hatfield (and she really did). The love of his life Jerriann Clepper went before him on April 8, 1988. When David was born his family was in quarantine for Polio. Jerry Jr was in the hospital and Freddie had passed on October 28, 1950. Because of this mom was not able to bring David home from the hospital and he instead spent the first few months of his life living with mom's best friend Alice.
