James M. "Mac" Tilley
December 30, 1945 - June 1, 2021

ROCKY MOUNT – James M. "Mac" Tilley, age 75, passed away on Tuesday, June 1, 2021. Born in Durham County, NC on December 30, 1945, he was the son of the late Adophlus L. Tilley, Jr. and Daisy Dixon Tilley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances "Frankie" Joyner Tilley; and his brothers, Adophlus L. "Buzzy" Tilley, III and Felton Dixon Tilley.

Mac was an active member of the community and will be greatly missed. Mac attended public school in Rocky Mount, graduating from Rocky Mount Senior High in 1964. Mac was a proud member of Boy Scout Troop 11. Under the guidance of his mentor, Bill Draper, Mac attained the rank of senior troop leader and Eagle Scout. Mac later became the scoutmaster of Troop 11 in 1973 where he mentored many of Rocky Mount's current community leaders. Mac graduated from East Carolina University in 1968 with a BA degree in Business Administration. Soon after graduation, he embarked on a lifelong career with the Ohio Casualty Insurance Company as a claims adjuster. He rose to the top rank in his field with Ohio Casualty and was respected for his knowledge and professionalism by his peers. Mac served as a member of the Nash County Planning Board for many years and was elected chairman for 2 terms. Mac was an active and loyal member of the Church of the Good Shepherd where he served on the Vestry and as a head usher. He faithfully volunteered with Meals on Wheels for many years.

Mac loved the outdoors and was always ready for a fishing or hunting trip with his buddies. He cared deeply about his friends and family and was always the first person at the door to lend a helping hand. His smile and his special sense of humor always lit up the room. He loved Bluegrass Music and he especially loved entertaining friends and neighbors. He was the self-appointed social chairman of the Cobblestone neighborhood where he always commanded the grill. Mac was the founder and permanent host of the Little Friday Men's group where many tall tales were told and retold. He served as general manager of the Rocky Mount Fair for over 30 years. Mac was a former member of Benvenue Country Club where he served on the board of directors and as President.

Mac is survived by his children, James McDonald Tilley, II (Maddie), Lynn Tilley Fourr (Brian), Adolphus Linwood Tilley, IV; his step-daughter, Julia Harlow Levy (Jeff) of Rocky Mount; his dear friend, Carol Lancaster; his sisters-in-law, Judith S. Tilley of Goldsboro and Sylvia B. Tilley of Elizabeth City; and his nieces, Amanda Tilley and Mary Alice Tilley.
