James Jackson ''Jack'' Wayland, 72, of Route 6, died April 26, 1997, in Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
A son of the late Russell Barborie Wayland Sr. and Victoria Daniel Wayland, he was born Feb. 5, 1925, in Portsmouth. He graduated from Churchland High School in Portsmouth, attended University of Virginia and graduated from Stetson University in Deland, Fla. Mr. Wayland served in the Army during World War II and was a paratrooper with the U.S. Infantry. He was awarded a purple heart, bronze star and four campaign stars.
Mr. Wayland coached football, basketball and track at Churchland and Culpeper High School, and was also employed in the Rappahannock school system. He handled television science and physics in Norfolk County public schools from 1961 until 1966. He retired from the Fairfax County school system.
He was active in the Spotswood Athletic Booster's Club and had coached state champion Culpeper High School track and football team; was awarded seven National Science Foundation grants; served as president of the State Coaches Association; and was president of the PTA.
He was a member of the Baptist Church and served as chairman of the Board of Deacons. He had been active in the Rotary, Masonic Lodges and various other community activities during his lifetime.
He married Anita D. Wayland who survives him. Also surviving are five sons, Gary Brown Wayland of Front Royal, Edward Daniel Wayland of Sperryville, James Jackson Wayland Jr. of Virginia Beach, Patrick Christian Shaw and Andrew Derek Shaw, both of Harrisonburg; a daughter, Melanie Camille Shaw of Harrisonburg; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Doris Virginia Smith and Gladys Victoria Hoggard, boty of Portsmouth. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Demple Brown and Jewel Woodrow Morgan; and a brother, Russell B. Wayland Jr.
His body will be cremated at Lindsey Cremation Chapel. A private memorial service will be held for the family. Those desiring to do so may make contributions to their favorite charity in his memory.
