A graduate of Harvard University Class of 1875, he went to work for his father in the United States Cartridge Works. With his genius for invention, he created over time nearly all the machinery in the company which under his direction became one of the largest small arms munition companies in the country. During the World War the company supplied more munitions than any other.
He was connected to several other companies such as the Wamesit Power Company, the Bleachery and the United States Bunting Company. He had controlling interest in the Middlesex Woolen Company and the Whittier Woolen Company. He was a Republican but he never sought any public office.
His name was well known in the yachting world and he was one of the organizers of what today is the Vesper Country Club where he served as president for many years.
