James William Neff, Bill, 91, who was born June 1929, died of old age Nov. 20, 2020 peacefully at home in North Logan, Utah. He was married for 69 years to his wife and high school sweetheart, Marilyn Bingham Neff, deceased. He is survived by his sister, LaRae Whittle, his 4 children, Wendy Ashcroft Buhr (Tom), David Neff, Terry Allen (Dan), and Jamey Neff, 25 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren.
Being born at the beginning of the Great Depression and living in humble circumstances, he moved around with his family to where the work was for his father. He learned to work at a very young age and was never afraid of hard things.
Bill met his wife, Marilyn while working in his future father-in-law, Heber Bingham's restaurant during his senior year at Logan High School. They were married in 1949. He attended Utah State University and received a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting. Later he got a Master's in Business Administration.
During his education he joined the Army ROTC program. He was on active duty as an accountant in the army for 21 years. He served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars and lived in England, Germany and many places in the United States. He retired from the Army when 43 years old as a full bird Colonel. One of his outstanding achievements was developing an accounting system that the whole army adopted.
After Bill's retirement he dabbled in many business ventures. In his last business endeavor, he was instrumental in starting The Bridgerland Phone Book with his oldest daughter, Wendy which became very successful because of their efforts.
He loved reading and learning new things. He always had a project, whether it was helping his children with their homes, building greenhouses, or growing a garden to share produce with his children and grandchildren. His grandchildren got to know and love him because of his being around and having them help him as they got older. He had many dogs who he loved and never refused his children a home for a stray.
Bill was a great example and was generous to a fault. He blessed his children and others with his time and resources. He was always there to rescue his children and grandchildren no matter what the trouble.
He served in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in many callings. His longest calling was for about 20 years as the financial clerk for the Mt. Logan 25th Ward. He also served in the Logan, Utah Temple baptistry for 10 years.
Bill remained active and busy until his late 80's. His example and love will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
