Richard Lee Washington, 98, went home to heaven on Nov. 9, 2020, at Providence Medical Center.
Richard, or "Mr. Peacock," was born on May 28, 1922, to Elnora Washington- Hawkins and Thomas Coleman in College Station, Texas. Mr. Peacock was a military veteran when he came to Anchorage, Alaska, in 1947, with a grade-school education and experience in the dry-cleaning business. He got a job with OK Cleaners, and in the 1950s, he bought land on Lake Otis.
In 1966, he opened Peacock Cleaners, and supported many family and community members with the business. Through the years he owned other businesses and also donated services to a variety of charities. In 2008, after 40 years of serving the city of Anchorage and the surrounding areas, the "cleaners with a thousand eyes," closed.
A devoted Christian, Mr. Peacock rededicated his life to Christ in early 1960s and was a faithful member to the Dimond Boulevard Gospel Hall until his passing. Throughout his storms in life, Mr. Peacock very much enjoyed laughing and loving the people around him.
Mr. Peacock was preceded in death by his daughter, Jackie; son, James Sr.; and grandchildren, Wesley and Chet. He is survived by his sons, Billy, Richard Charles, David and Shawn; grandchildren, James Jr., Adrienne, Shannon, Quina, Blair, Chia, Jamie, Shane, Dusahn, Lio, Emma, Christopher, Shawn Curtis and Corey; a host of great-grandchildren; great-great grandchildren; and other relatives from the Washington, Coleman, and Hawkins families Members of Mr. Peacock's family have started a scholarship fund in his name and memory called the, Richard L. Washington Memorial Scholarship.
In lieu of sending flowers to the funeral home or grave site, please consider donating to the scholarship fund. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2020, at Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E Street, starting at 12 p.m. There will be a Zoom meeting for all who would like to attend: Meeting ID: 972 5409 2986 and Passcode: funeral.
