AND a host of nieces and nephews.
Alton took tremendous pride in his military service. He was 17 when he joined the Army and quickly grew out of his family given nickname of 'Boodle'. He answered his nation's call and fought in the far off foreign land of Korea. Hardly a day went by that he did not recount his experience in war. His awards include among others the Combat Infantry Badge, an indication that he engaged in direct action against a hardened and determined enemy. Very few events in a person's life can be so defining and stand as a testament to his character, strength, and courage. Maybe that is why it is ok to forgive him for being a little ill-tempered, stubborn, hard-headed, and warm-hearted curmudgeon he became later in life.
Alton was a devoted husband, father, uncle, and granddaddy who often doted on his children. In life, he provided for his family by working for TVA as a foreman who helped construct power facilities and infrastructure.
Alton loved sports, gardening, and hunting. He was an avid fan of Alabama football, played and coached baseball, fished, and mentored many a young hunter. He privately took the homegrown vegetables from his garden and shared within his community. Never taking any credit for this or many of the countless things he did for family and friends.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Spry Funeral Home of Huntsville, where the family will receive friends Tuesday, June 1st, 10:00am until Noon. Funeral service will follow at 12:00pm in Spry Funeral Home's Chapel with Nephews Mark Warren and Tyler Smith Officiating. Interment will follow at Green Valley Cemetery in Big Cove.
Pallbearers are Marlin Drake, Shannon Drake, Justin Osborne, Mitch Smith, Garrett Warren, and Blake Weber.
Honorary Pallbearers are John Osborne, Will Osborne, Drew Weber, and Hayden Will.
