Noah J. Buchanan, grandson of George W., gave an interview on June 24, 1929, in Clintwood, Virginia, in which he stated that the Buchanans of Dickenson County came from Yancey Co., North Carolina. They lived there on Toe River. Four brothers came to Dickenson Co., together. They were George, James, John and Bill. Bill returned to North Carolina. John and James lived beyond Coeburn on the Guest River in Wise County, Virginia. George first settled on Guest River; then moved to Lick Branch of Long's Fork; then after a few years to Letcher County, Kentucky. After 2 years there, he returned to Lick Branch.

While the grave marker states date of birth to be 6/25/1818, a family bible entry reflects 6/21/1818. George was a son of Arthur and Temperance Vance Buchanan.
