He was the paternal grandson of William T. & Martha Fowlkes of Nottoway Co, VA who removed to Petersburg, VA. He was gr-grandson of Hiram Fowlkes & Jane Brooks Bradshaw; and gr-gr grandson of William Archer "Quality Bill" Fowlkes and one of his 4 wives, Sarah Cralle of Nottoway County, VA.
Audry's was just 14 years old when his mother died in 1901, and his father remarried in 1905 to Julia "Etta" [Memorial #30939203] and later removed to Richmond.
As a young man, he was taken under the wing of his paternal uncle, Charles S. Fowlkes, who was the Station Manager for the railroad in Petersburg. By age 23 (1910), Audry was in Tarboro, NC working as a clerk for the railroad, and married to 31-year old, Mary Bynum, daugther of Edward T. Bynum (deceased) and Maud Barnes Bynum.
The young couple would have two children in quick succession: Mary Bynum Fowlkes (1911-1986), who later married William Randolph Martin; and Edward Bynum Fowlkes (1913-1984). In 1916, his wife of six years died of breast cancer, and the young widower was left to raise 2 children alone.
Audry continued his career with the railroad, and moved in with his widowed mother-in-law, Maud Barnes Bynum, where the children were raised in her Main Street home. At the time of his death, he was President of Edgecombe Bonded Warehouse.
