Sister Mary Sharon Burns, a Sister of Mercy for 72 years, passed away peacefully at The Villa, her community's retirement home in Baltimore. Formerly Head of the Theology Department at Loyola College (now University), she was the first woman and the first non-Jesuit to hold this office. Sister Sharon was known for her work with Judeo-Christian relations, and was an expert on the Holocaust.

For over 20 years, Sister Sharon ministered in Pastoral Care at the Cardinal Shehan Center in Timonium. She was a passionate advocate for hospice care, and was Hospice Chaplain at Stella Maris Hospice. She was educated at Mount Saint Agnes College, Notre Dame University, and Catholic University where she earned a PhD in Religion. Vibrant and charismatic, she was also a talented singer and actress, well known for her sense of humor.
A Wake Service will be held on November 7 at 6:30 PM at Ruck Towson Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 York Road (at beltway exit 26). Sister Sharon will lie-in-repose at Stella Maris in Timonium on Thursday, Novemebr 8 from 9:30 to 10:30 when A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Sister Sharon is survived by two sisters: Yolanda Burns, RSM, and Geraldine Petrone; and by her friend of many years, Mary Harper, RSM.
