Capt Martin W McCarty, Jr. and crew were assigned to the 323rd Squadron, 91st Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, operating from RAF Bassingbourn (USAAF Station 121) flying B-17F 41-24549, code OR-Q, nicknamed 'Stupen Takit' on their 14th mission. The aircraft sustained a direct hit from AA fire just after leaving the target of the railroad marshalling yards at Hamm, Germany. Capt McCarty ordered a bale out, but Bombardier 1st Lt John R Bell and Waist Gunner S/Sgt George W Engle were the only two crewmen that managed to parachute from the aircraft before it exploded. Both were captured as Prisoners of War (POW)The aircraft crashed near Buldern, Germany.
