In 1740 he was originally buried in the Garnisonskirche in Potsdam, from 1945-1953 his sarcophagus was relocated to the Elisabethkirche in Marburg (Hesse). After that his remains were kept at the Hohenzollern Castle near Hechingen (Baden-Württemberg). In 1991 his sarcophagus returned to Potsdam and is now finding its final (?) resting place in the Kaiser-Friedrich-Mausoleum near the Friedenskirche, inside the Royal Gardens of the Sanssouci Castle.

The original black marble sarcophogus was destroyed in 1945, and the current one is a copy made from copper.
