Helen Jones Smith was born on 28 Jan 1847, the second daughter of William Burrows Smith and Frances Susan Jones, in Charleston, SC. Her older sister was Frances Rosa Smith Heyward (1843 - 1898), and her younger sister was Pauline Smith Heyward (1850 - 1904).

Helen Jones Smith married William Baynard Whaley in Pendleton, SC, on August 29th, 1865. She was 18 years old at the time.

Together, they had seven children, five of who reached adulthood:
